Western Dressage – A New Discipline
There is a new discipline out there spreading across the country. It is basically Dressage in western tack. The description of the horse’s gaits is virtually the same as classical dressage. As with classical dressage, any horse that can walk, trot and canter can do western dressage. According to the Western Dressage Association of America, this discipline causes the horse to become more balanced and athletic and the rider to become more skilled and light.
If you don’t have Western Dressage instructors in your area, you can take lessons from any dressage instructor who is familiar with the Western Dressage rules and is willing to work with western horses. Instructors also have to be receptive to the idea of using western tack.
The Western Dressage Association of America was established in September, 2010. The WDAA offers memberships, information about the discipline, clinics, and educational materials.
